If you only tuned into the Nintendo Spotlight during E3 this week, you missed out on one of the big announcements of the entire show. A new side-scrolling Metroid game will be coming to the 3DS later this year and is being developed by Castlevania: Lords of Shadow team, Mercury Steam.
Metroid: Samus Returns is a “reimagination” of the 1991 Game Boy game – Metroid II: Return of Samus – and will feature plenty of divergent paths, bosses and more. Samus will also have some new abilities including melee attacks which will allow her to stun and get critical strikes on opponents, an precision shooting which will give her full range of motion.
“Metroid is one of the most recognized Nintendo franchises and we are so honoured to collaborate with them on the latest game in the saga of space-faring bounty hunter Samus Aran,” said Enric Alvarez, Head of Studio at MercurySteam. “Our collaboration with Nintendo will give gamers around the world the chance to play this fantastic adventure in a completely new way not seen before”.
“The development of this Metroid game with Mercury Steam has gone very smoothly and more than anything, it has been very exciting,” said Yoshio Sakamoto, senior officer of Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development Department, and the producer of the overall Metroid franchise. “Metroid: Samus Returns is based on the GameBoy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus, and we are very confident that this collaboration with Mercury Steam is the reason we have been able to successfully pull together various features like actions never seen before in the Metroid series, a stunning recreation of the planet SR388 and classical Metroid gameplay elements into a single powerful package.”
While this is the second Metroid game Nintendo announced it is also the one with the most information. Metroid Prime 4 was announced during the Spotlight and only really showed off a logo. Still, given Mercury Steam’s past titles (specifically Castlevania) we’re sure Samus Returns will be a triumphant return of our favourite bounty hunter.
Metroid: Samus Returns is out September 15th 2017, and will include Amiibo Support including two new figures coming out alongside the game.
