When it was first announced, we had no idea how developer Cryptic Studios would be able to make a Diablo-style action RPG out of Magic: The Gathering – a game that is best known as a competitive card game.
However, Cryptic Studios shared a new video (via IGN) that shows off how the upcoming free-to-play RPG will be using card game as inspiration for Magic: Legends and gives us a better idea of what to expect.
In Magic: Legends, players will be able to create a deck of 12 spells, with four available at a time with new spells cycling in as players use them – creating a system where players can set up specializations and tactics while still following that bit of luck required in a card game. Spells will follow the five schools of magic: White, Red, Blue, Black, and Green – with character classes also aligning but not locked to the affinities.
Magic: Legends will be published by Perfect World Entertainment (Neverwinter, Defiance 2050) and is set to launch on PS4, PC, and Xbox One in 2021. An open beta will be coming on March 23rd, 2021 exclusively for the PC. Fans of Magic: The Gathering will also be happy to know that a Netflix Animated series is coming with Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to produce.
