With the Music Industry falling on some hard times, musicians are always looking for new ways to get their music out there. It seems like this is just some of the motivation for Pop Sandbox’s latest game, Loud on Planet X, a rhythm/Tower Defence game that feels like a mash of Rock Band/Guitar Hero with Plants vs Zombies.
So how does the game work? Players will defend their stage from Alien invaders by ‘tapping’ along to the music and gain concert based weapons such as smoke machines and strobe lights by maintaining a streak and keeping with the rhythm of the song. Currently the game features 12 Canadian bands including Tegan and Sara, METZ, Metric, Lights, July Talk, F*cked Up, Cadence Weapon, and Austra, who were confirmed on the game’s Kickstarter page. The artists themselves make an appearance and will have their own special moves to help clear out the aliens. One example that was described in an interview with Polygon, mentioned F*cked Up’s vocalist Damian Abraham, who is famous for his stage dives, sending copies of himself into the crowd to crush the Aliens.
The game is being funded by Interactive Digital Media Fund of the Ontario Media Development Corporation, a project that help fund games like N++ and Guacamelee, as well as FACTOR, the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings; which is helping to cover some of the music licensing fees.
However the team additional funding via Kickstarter to after a budget shortfall of $100,000. The team is looking to get $50,000 CAD to successfully fund the game, at the time of this writing, they have earned $14,015 with 30 Days left. The game is in development for PlayStation Network (PlayStation 4 and PS Vita), Steam, and select mobile devices (iOS & Android), with Wii U and the possibility of an Xbox One version as stretch goals.
