Of all the video game heroines available, Lara Croft seems to be the most iconic to receive a main-stream toyline. The Tomb Raider has been around since the early Playstation One day (1996 to be exact) and remains to be a phenomenon over a series of highly successful games, comics, and movies, the latest of which comes out next month.
In coalition with the movie, Mattel has announced the next Barbie doll to be none other than Lara Croft, based on actress Alicia Vikander portrayal of the character in the film. The doll is priced at $30 and pre-orders are available now. This badass Barbie includes some classic Tomb Raiding accessories including Lara’s trusty Pick Axe, Journal, Map and more, as well as a certificate of authenticity. It is especially notable that the doll does not come with Croft’s iconic dual pistols or a bow that has become attached to the character since the series reboot. You can check out an unboxing of the doll at the Panic Pixie YouTube Channel to see everything that the doll comes with.
The new Tomb Raider will be based around the 2013 reboot of the series and tell an origin story for Croft. “She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits,” Vikander said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “But we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought she was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”
The film also stars Dominic West (The Punisher: War Zone), Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight) and Daniel Wu (Into the Badlands), and is directed by Roar Uthaug, who is best known for the critically acclaimed disaster movie The Wave. The film is out in theatres on March 16th.
Square Enix previously confirmed a new Tomb Raider title is on the way for a 2018 release, however details remain a mystery.
