According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Cena is in talks to play Duke Nukem in an upcoming movie based on the game series. The film is coming from Paramount and Michael Bay’s production studio Platinum Dunes (well that makes sense now), and is reportedly in the early stages of production.
No director or other cast members have been announced however a search is underway to find a writer. There is no word on any other actors who might be in the running to play Duke at this time, but if he can seriously think The Marine was a good film choice, I’m sure he’ll bring the same sort of charisma to Duke.
Cena has been busy making a name for himself in Hollywood as he appeared in Trainwreck and recently voiced the titular character Ferdinand in the animated movie of the same name. He also worked with Paramount on Daddy’s home 2 and is currently set to show up in the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
Duke Nukem on the other hand, has remained dormant in his own series after 2011’s critically panned Duke Nukem Forever. Gearbox Software currently own the rights to the series and confirmed that concept work has been done on a new game but they might not be the ones to make it.
“I think the faster way is that a correct developer can become interested and we can work with them,” Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said about the project in 2015. “I think it’s a challenging problem. But, I’ll tell you one thing. When it does happen, there’s no doubt that the whole industry will turn its head and look.”
Duke did make an appearance in Bulletstorm Full Clip Edition as a special DLC cameo where he replaced the main character.
