Greg Anderson once wrote “Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” This is a quote (while used allot for describing the game) that best suits Journey, a new PS3 Exclusive from ThatGameCompany (same team that brought you Flower.)
Journey is a game that many will use in an argument to say that Video Games can be art, and this is the few times when someone can say this and be 100% right, because Journey is truly a piece art.
In Journey you play as an unknown robed character, henceforth known as The Traveler (not an official name, but works well.) You start the game in the middle of the desert attempting to reach your destination, an eerie glowing light at on the top of a mountain.
The Journey is a dangerous one as you cross scorching deserts, dangerous ruins and snowy mountains to reach the mountain, but your not alone in it, as other players are seamlessly introduced into the single-player mode while connected online.
This proves to be one of the most interesting aspects of Journey, as players other players do not have a name over their character or any voice abilities. Communication happens at the touch of a button, a vocal bubble will appear. This is used in more ways then just communication, it helps when your characters are jumping and flying together as well as finding where you’re buddies are located. You won’t know who your playing with until the end of the credits. It’s a great system because after a while you start to care about helping your new friends get to their destination, even though you never met them in your life.
If I have any complaint about the game, is that it feels short, however you realize once you start playing the game that there is a reason why it’s short. The game is meant to be played in one sitting, and is meant to be enjoyed by a lot of people.
Journey is by far one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have in recent history, and it should not be pass up.
Journey – 9 out of 10
Pros – Online integration into the single player mode, graphically beautiful, Overall great experience.
