Back in 2008, then developer Darkworks, before it went belly up, showed off I AM ALIVE a survival/ apocalypse experience. Then in 2010 Ubisoft moved the project to Ubisoft Shanghai to complete, and in fall of last year it ubisoft announced that the game was going to be released on XBLA and PSN. On Jan 23 2011 the developer released a statement on facebook saying that it was going to be released on March 7.
The story revolves around Adam, a man that is trying to find his wife Julie and his daughter Mary in the city of Haventon. The game takes place one year after a worldwide cataclysm that wiped out most of human civilization and left the world barely habitable. With miles of wasteland, massive dust storm and hostiles that want to kill you, you have to survive to find your family.
The gameplay is very solid and good, although some points of the game can get frustrating. When you face enemies you can die fast if you don’t play it tactically. Ammo is super precious because most times when you pick up ammo you may just get one bullet so you need to be wise with that bullet. The bow and arrow is very awesome because the arrows are reusable and very deadly, however it does take longer to shoot an enemy. About 50% of the game is spent climbing on buildings, pipes and other stuff. When climbing around you have to watch your stamina bar, if it runs out you’ll fall off and die.
The graphics of the game are amazing for a XBLA title. It looks like a full disc base game but only on a 1.5 GB download. For the size of the game it is surprising how mind blowing the world is and how massive buildings are.
So after my time with I AM ALIVE, I have to say I did enjoy it but the ending was just ok. Other than that I’ll probably give it another play. It took about 5 hours to play through and it was only 1200 ms (15$); so it was a great bargain. This game is not for everyone it falls into a category that is more original. This game would appeal to people that enjoyed games such as fallout , Metro 2033 and most survival horror titles.
I Am Alive – 8 out of 10
Pros – the graphic’s, only 1200 MS points, solid story, game environments and originality.
Cons – frustrating at some points, one wrong move you die!
