While an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Survival Horror game, The Last of Us, has in the pipeline for some time now starting back in 2014, however, the project stalled in 2016 after some creative disagreements. However, there is hope for the series as HBO has announced that they’ll be working with series creator Neil Druckmann to bring the game as a TV series.
HBO announced the project via Twitter on Thursday with a clip of the Fireflies simple, a militia in The Last of Us that believes in finding a cure for the cordyceps parasite that has been turning people into fungal zombies. The Hollywood Reporter followed up to announce that the project will be a TV series led by Craig Mazin, who previously worked with HBO on 2019’s Chernobyl, while Druckmann will write and executive-produce the TV show.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Mazin and Druckmann plan to cover the events of the original game in the HBO series with “the possibility of additional content” based on the sequel.
“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” Mazin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil.”
“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us,” Druckmann said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”
The series is being produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s new film and TV group, PlayStation Productions, and will be the first TV series from the group. As the show is in early development, we don’t have a release date or a cast announcement yet, however, we’ll keep you posted if any news comes out about the project.
In the meantime, players will be able to continue Ellie’s story in The Last of Us Part 2 when the game launches on May 29th.
