CD Projekt Red has drastically improved Gwent, the card collecting mini-game from The Witcher 3, since releasing it as a free to play CCG on PS4, Xbox One and PC, however there is still plenty that the company has planned before the game leaves beta including a previously announced single-player campaign called Thronebreaker.
It now seems like Thronebreaker may have been too big for its own good as Eurogamer has reported that during a call with investors, Thronebreaker will now be a stand-alone game called Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, and will launch alongside Gwent sometime this year.
The reason why they broke it off from the free to play card game is because the content has seen a massive increase in scope in becoming a full-scale RPG clocking in at about 30 hours, and will be full of choices and consequences, where actions are still decided via games of Gwent.
There is no release date for Thronebreaker, however a major Gwent overhaul called Homecoming is set to course-correct Gwent’s development as CD Projekt Red stated that they “lost sight of what was unique and fun about the game.” This update is now scheduled to arrive in Q4.
Thronebreaker is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
