After a 13 year run, popular video game site GameTrailers.com has officially shut down. The announcement came yesterday via the site’s social media pages, which Editor-in-chief Brandon Jones tweeted: “today is the last day of GameTrailers. I wish it wasn’t so.”
The site was posting it’s standard fare of video reviews, trailers, and guides right up to the surprise announcement, as Associate Editor Ben Moore mentioned that the team only knew about the layoffs mere hours before the official announcements.
The decision to close the website was made by Defy Media, the parent company of GameTrailers, Break Entertainment, The Escapists and Smosh. The company brought the website in 2014, which then was hit with layoffs shortly after.
GameTrailers was created in 2002 and at the time was the media hub for video game trailers, as well as content creators such as Screwattack and Monty Oum’s early work, the site had even seen a Late Night News segment on Spike TV. GameTrailers.com also helped pioneer the internet video space, predating video services like Twitch and Youtube.
“We’re proud we helped bring this world into being. That is the legacy of GameTrailers. We’re grateful to all of our fans who helped make us successful. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure.”
As a young teen, I used GameTrailers a lot, in fact early blog posts on the site were inspirations to me to pursue writing, Video Game Design and Video Game Journalism. So personally I feel like I owe a lot to the GameTrailers site, and it is extremely sad to see them go. The crew at GameItAll wish the GT team all the best with their future endeavours.
