Of all the categories for Game of the Year, this is one you don’t want to be on. As much as we have celebrated the best that the year had to offer, there was a lot of s**t we had to deal with. Whether it was a cancellation of a major game that could have been game of the year, an extremely Glitchy game, or something that just failed to reach expectations. Here were our biggest disappointments of the year.
AND THE NOMINEES ARE:
TONY HAWK PRO SKATER 5
THE ORDER 1886
SILENT HILLS/PT/KONAMI
BATMAN ARKHAM KNIGHT – PC
AFRO SAMURAI 2: THE REVENGE OF KUMA
AND THE LOSER IS:
SILENT HILLS/PT/KONAMI
We couldn’t decide if the biggest disappointment was the cancellation of Silent Hills, a survival horror game from Metal Gear director Hideo Kojima and Crimson Peak director Guillermo del Toro, was the bigger disappointment or if it was Konami, who had a giant clusterf**k of a year.
The cancellation was confirmed by Guillermo del Toro back in April, it was due to an internal conflict at Konami which saw Kojima and some of his staff planning to leave the company after the completion of Metal Gear Solid V. After that report, Konami soon confirmed the cancellation and announced that they were also pulling PT, the playable teaser for the game.
What happened following led to several months of strange events. The PT Demo not being available even to those who downloaded the game before, Kojima’s name being removed from MGS V’s box art, the closure of Kojima productions (which recently opened back up as a Sony studio), and preventing Hideo Kojima from accepting his award at The Video Game Awards.
Silent Hills took us by surprised from the PT Demo and it is a shame that it became an unfortunate victim in everything that happened because it could have had the potential to be a Game of the Year winner.
