With a new film underway and legions of fans, Frank Herbert’s Dune series is prime for a new video game adaptation, and what better developer to bring it than Funcom, developers of The Secret World, Age of Conan/Conan Exiles, and publisher of last year’s Mutant: Year Zero.
In a press statement release yesterday, Funcom’s CEO Rui Carsais announced a partnership with Legendary Entertainment for a 6 year contract for a minimum of 3 games on pc and console, one of which to be an “open world multiplayer” game that will begin pre-production later this year.
“We are very excited to announce an exclusive gaming partnership with Legendary Entertainment to develop a line of video games based on the works of Frank Herbert’s Dune,” Casais said. “Dune is one of the world’s best-known science fiction universes and a personal favourite of mine. To work on Dune games is a dream come true for many of us in Funcom.”
Dune has major history in the video game world as well. In 1992, Westwood Studios created Dune II which quickly became the template for Real-Time Strategy games which inspired the Command and Conquer series. This brought together features such as the fog of war, military micromanagement, resource management and base-building gameplay that no decent RTS game should be without.
We’ll hopefully hear more about how Funcom intends to develop the series as progress on the movie and games progress.
