If you’re unfamiliar with Fist of the North Star, let’s give you a bit of a history lesson. The series was a favourite Shōnen Jump that originally ran from 1983 to 1988, it was a martial arts infused post-apocalyptic about a world destroyed by Nuclear war. The story focused on Kenshiro, the successor of a deadly martial art style known as Hokuto Shiken, which gave him the ability to kill his opponents by hitting vital points in a human body, often resulting in gory deaths. The series was adapted into two animes, a series a films, OVA, video games (most recently one from Koei Temco on PS3/X360) and a live action film in 1995.
Sega announced at E3 that they will be bringing back the series on PS4 with Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise this October, and while the series may be a cult classic – Sega is doing their best to ease newcomers to the series by providing a full english voiceover, and more over the top bloodshed.
“To be completely honest, we’re not really sure how many Western fans are familiar with Fist of the North Star to begin with,” producer Daisuke Sato told Polygon E3. “Our feeling is that maybe not so many people — it’s not a massively popular title over here. It’s a cult classic.”
The team is even going as far to translate some of the death cries from the enemies, which Kenshiro can use as a weapon. “There are a lot of death cries that have been localized into English,” said Sato, noting that they are often among the most explicit. Examples: “Shit balls, fuck off.”
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise was developed by the Yakuza team (making it three games that they’ll be releasing this year in the west with Yakuza 6, and Yakuza Kiwami 2) so expect to see some Yakuza style minigames to also make an appearance. The game is set for an October 2nd release date in the Americas.
