While Square Enix only gave us a glance at Marvel’s Avengers at E3 this year, it was mostly all cutscene with small cinematic gameplay elements which didn’t give us much to go on. Now with Gamescom underway, we’ve been given an 18 minute look at the A-Day story mission which gives us the ability to play as all 5 playable Avengers.
The A-Day mission starts with the team unveiling their new headquarters in San Francisco – including their own Helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source when they are attacked in a well-planned and deadly heist. From here we’re given a better look at how the game will play as Thor comes swinging his hammer in a 3rd person brawler fashion.
Thor is definitely power focused but has some cool techniques such as creating Lightning and Whirlwinds to lift opponents, and gives him the ability to throw his hammer at distant enemies. Iron Man shows next with a Star Fox style shooting/flying taking down groups of jetpack wearing fighters, then taking down to the ground with ranged strikes, missiles and Unibeam attacks.
This leads to our first look at the Hulk, which may be the best rendition of the characters since Ultimate Destruction, as he uses the environment to smash his way through the foot soldiers in a way that you almost feel sorry for them, especially when he picks up two of them and claps them together. Still this looks pretty normal for 3rd person adventure games, but then we get to Captain America, who is a much more defensive looking player then I’d imagine with heavy focus on blocking attacks with the shield and launching it at several enemies.
Finally we get a showdown with The Taskmaster who is orchestrating the heist, with a sonic bomb set to destroy most of San Fransico. We’re then given a look at Black Widow as she chases the villain down and beats him down in a one on one fight which highlights the use of fire-arms, tonfas, electric shocks and invisibility abilities.
This gives us pretty much what we’d expect from an Avengers game and without getting an actual hands on with the title we can definitely say it looks good in terms of the single-player story mode, which is the safest part of a Marvel Superhero game. However the knowledge that there is a Multiplayer mode in this game that will allow you to customize your heroes and team up with your friends in specific events is still making us wonder how this will play out.
Marvel’s Avengers is set to release on May 15th 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
