We knew it was coming, that eventually we’d have our first Pokemon Live Action film. What we were not expecting is that the first for Detective Pikachu looked so damn good.
Loosely based on the 3DS game of the same name, Detective Pikachu follows Tim, a boy who is searching for his missing father before stumbling on a Pikachu who can talk and claims he’s a detective. Tim is the only one who can understands the wise-cracking Pikachu and the two are on the case to find Tim’s dad.
The film stars Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, and Tim is played by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Ken Watanabe, Rita Ora, Suki Waterhouse and Bill Nighy rounds out the human cast. The trailer also showcases several major Pokemon will at least make an appearance including the likes of Mr. Mime, Charazard, Jigglypuff, Bulbasaur, Psyduck, Greninja and more.
This is the first time that Pokemon have officially been given the live-action thanks to Legendary Pictures. The latest trailer also dropped just in time as the first Switch playable Pokemon title – Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee – comes out later this week on November 16th.
Detective Pikachu is set for a theatrical release on May 9th 2019.
