While Microsoft and Nintendo are getting along nicely by allowing players to enjoy Minecraft, Fortnite and Rocket League, however Sony has been holding back, with Sony terrible excuses about security for a young installation base, while former Sony Online Entertainment president claims that Crossplay is being held back because of Money.
Crossplay will likely be a huge factor affecting games, including the upcoming Bethesda Online Only title – Fallout 76. In an interview with German publication GameStar.de , Bethesda Game Studios director and creative lead behind Fallout 76, Todd Howard, bluntly called out Sony when asked about Crossplay.
“You cannot do cross-play in 76,” Howard said in the interview. “We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.”
Bethesda has had a rocky relationship with Sony in the past. Back in 2016, Bethesda launched its “Creation Club” system that would allow mods on consoles, the program seemed to work without much difficulties for PC and Xbox One however the service was delayed for Playstation. By September of that year, the service was still not rolled out for PS4 and it appeared that Bethesda gave up, citing Sony’s approval processes being the blame. A month after the news broke, the Creation Club system finally came to PS4.
It’s currently hard to say if all this pressure, along with a very entertaining trailer for Minecraft on Switch and Xbox One, will make Sony change their mind on Cross-console play. We do know it is possible thanks to Epic Games, who unlocked Cross Platform play between PS4 and Xbox One accidentally for Fortnite, allowing the two consoles to play against each other for a time.
