There are ton of gaming urban legends in gaming, one of the more infamous involves one of the worst games in history, ET The video game. For those who don’t know the story, ET The Video Game was developed and published by Atari Inc in 1982, based on the Steven Spielberg movie of the same name. Designed by Howard Scott Warshaw for the Atari 2600, the game was universally panned and was one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming history, it is often said that the release of this game is part of the cause of the Great Video Game Crash of 1983.
As the rumour goes, “Several Million” copies of the game was buried in a New Mexico Landfill. The rumour has been around since 1984, that is until Fuel Entertainment with funding from Microsoft were able to excavate a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where evidence of the burial site was found in the early hours of excavation. Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb was one of the first to announce the findings, citing multiple ET games along with other titles including the Atari port of Pac-Man and Centipede was found.
The excavation started earlier today, April 26th 2014, and was open to the public. A documentary about the dig will be released exclusively on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
