It’s been a long and confusing wait but we finally got a ton of information on Hideo Kojima’s upcoming and emagatic Death Stranding, including a bigger cast list, new gameplay footage and most importantly, a release date for when we’ll be able to actually play it.
The new trailer runs close to 9 minutes, but gives us a lot of new information and questions to go along with it. The biggest thing to pull out from the trailer is that we get actual gameplay of the various type of actions we’ll see in the game. This includes more of the open world exploring that we seen in the last trailer, including new tools to help traverse the terrain, but we also know that protagonist Sam, played by Norman Reedus, will be able to fend for himself against some of the more physical threats via stealth, hand to hand combat and firearms.
The trailer also highlighted more cast members for the game. While Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead, Boondock Saints) and Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Hannibal) have been confirmed since the beginning as Sam and Cliff respectively, the rest of the cast has been rounded out with Lea Seydoux (007: Spectre) as Fragile, Margaret Qualley (Death Note, The Nice Guys) as Mama, Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid V) as Higgs, Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman) as Amelie, and two of Kojima’s director friends, Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn, lend their likeness to Deadman and Heartman, however they will not be voicing their characters.
In terms of what you can expect from the story… well it still isn’t completely clear, however Kojima released a statement on the game’s themes which may help give a hint on what we can expect.
People have created “Walls” and become accustomed to living in isolation.
“Death Stranding” is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the “Strand” or connection. As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to bridge the divides in society, and in doing create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.
The trailer also ends on a big high note, the release date, which by surprise comes out later this year! Death Stranding is currently set to release on November 8th on Playstation 4 and will be available digitally and physically. Those who are looking to spend a little extra can splurge for the Collectors Edition, which comes with a host of in-game items, a keychain and your very own BB pod with a life-sized baby. The Collectors Edition is priced at $200 USD.
