During an earnings call, THQ Nordic announced that they have 80 projects in development. This includes games like the upcoming Biomutant, Wreckfest, Shenmue 3, as well as top secret projects from War Horse, Volition, and 4A Games. But the surprising logo in the announcement image highlights that Dead Island 2 is still in production despite being missing from the spotlight for some time.
Dead Island 2 was announced during Sony’s E3 Press Conference in 2014 and originally had Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager set to develop as original developer Techland moved on to bigger, better things with Dying Light. However in 2015, Deep Silver announced that they were parting ways with Yager and that Sumo Digital would be taking over as lead developers.
THQ Nordic then acquired Deep Silver, making them the new publisher for Dead Island 2, placing the logo on the upcoming release image which suggest that the game is in the works. THQ Nordic CEO Lars Wingefors has since then confirmed it to IGN by saying “Dead Island 2 [is] still being worked on. Stay tuned.”
When Dead Island 2 was originally announced, the game was said to have a heavy emphasis on melee combat and RPG elements. Based on interviews and the trailer for the game, it looked like it promised to lean on a more comedic take on the zombie apocalypse than its predecessor, which highlighted an emotional zombie attack and followed up with a rapper screaming “Who do you Voodoo b***h!” Seriously left a confusing tone for the rest of the game.
