Just when April was looking to be hard on our wallets with games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Resident Evil 3, CD Project Red decided to show us mercy and delay the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 until September. Okay, so mercy is not the case of the delay but rather that the team needs a little more time to make sure that the game runs smoothly as well as to fix and polish it up.
“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done,” said Marcin Iwinski and Adam Badowski, co-founder and head of studio at developer CD Projekt Red, respectively, in a statement on Twitter. “Night City is massive — full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing. We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”
Despite the delay moving it closer to the Holiday window, when both the Xbox Series X and the PS5 will be set to release, Cyberpunk 2077 will still be coming for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. Still, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t plans for the future:
“We are going with the same plans that we set,” CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kiciński reiterated. “[Cyberpunk 2077] was always designed for [PS4 and Xbox One]. We are thinking about the next generation, but for now, we are focused on the current generation. That plan is still valid. If there is an opportunity for us to launch Cyberpunk for another generation, we would want to do this probably.”
The studio also isn’t worried about releasing the game during this time as the new consoles release (or where it is one of the busiest times for game launches). “We believe that our game–a big single-player RPG with a great story–will find its place in the market regardless of the date,” CD Projekt Red board member of SVP business development Michał Nowakowski said.
“There’s always something happening no matter what time of the year you’re looking at. The games industry is not an industry where you can say that any given month is safer for whatever reason. So in that regard, we don’t see September as more threatening than April or June,” Nielubowicz added.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the third game to see a delay this week, earlier Square Enix announced that the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be pushed to April (pitting it against Cyberpunk in its original release date) as well as Marvel’s The Avengers.
