I… Really don’t know how to report this story.
The team that brought you the hit game Angry Birds, want to make a movie! yeah I know it’s crazy.
Rumors of an Angry Birds movie have been circulating for some time, but it had taken one major step closer last week, when the company hired former Marvel Studios head David Maisel to help with the guidance of the project.
Maisel, as Variety states, helped Marvel make the jump from comics to films earning them half a billion dollars in financing, this allowed the company to make key titles like Iron Man, Thor, and Iron Man and playing a crucial role in the negotiations of the sale of the studio to Disney which was a $4 billion dollar transaction. Roxio hopes that Maisel can work the same kind of magic for them.
Maisel is just the latest in a series of steps Roxio has taken to develop their game into a multimedia phenomenon. Last month, the studio bought Finnish animation studio Kombo and raised nearly $50 million in financing. They intend to use these funds to create series of Angry Birds animated shorts that will introduce the characters and hopefully pave the way to the feature film.
Now whether or not we actually will watch an Angry Birds film is the question, but as Maisel states, “There has been so much chatter about an Angry Birds movie, but it’s now real. The process is starting now.” As proof, he is speaking to writers and directors about the project.
Angry Birds might not be movie material. The game, in which your launching birds at pigs hidden inside structures doesn’t have a deep story. However, we’re about to see movies based on board-games including Battleship, I think they can find a way to manage.
I have to wonder though, will it be so bad that people will to throw themselves at theater with a giant slingshot? I’d personally pay to see that!
