Christopher Judge, who is best known for his role at Teal’c in Stargate and the voice behind Kratos in 2018’s God of War, will be lending his as King T’Challa, otherwise known as Black Panther, in the upcoming expansion to Marvel’s Avengers game – The War for Wakanda. The announcement came from Entertainment Weekly last Thursday, which also leaked some information about the upcoming expansion – including the news that the expansion will boost the total campaign time (including the base story, the Hawkeye and Kate Bishop expansions) to 25 hours.
According to Judge, he initially did not want to do the role out of respect for the late Chadwick Boseman – the actor famous for portraying the Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who died of cancer in 2020. “I turned it down straight away,” Judge told EW. “There’s many Black Panthers, but I really didn’t believe that anyone should ever do T’Challa again [after Boseman]. The actual talks proceeded and, basically, I wound up doing it because my mother and my children said if I didn’t do it, they would disown me.”
In Crystal Dynamic’s version of Avengers, T’Challa is older and has been king for some time. “Chadwick’s performance was somebody who had more questions about how to perform the role of Black Panther and king. This version doesn’t have those questions,” said Evan Narcisse, a story consultant on War for Wakanda and writer of Marvel’s Rise of the Black Panther series. Narcisse, along with Narrative lead Hannah MacLeod, has promised some significant changes to the Black Panther story that players may know from the comics and movies.
The War for Wakanda expansion is set to release in August and will add Black Panther to the roster as the ninth hero to the Super Hero Team. We were given a glimpse of the upcoming expansion during Square Enix’s digital E3 presentation which you can see the trailer for below.
Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman will appear one last time as T’Challa in Marvel’s upcoming Disney Plus series “What if…” in which we see what would happen if T’Challa was abducted by the Ravengers instead of Peter Quill (Starlord), and Square Enix will get a chance at redemption with Marvel with the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Game.
