After over 25 years of voice various characters in the Super Mario Bros series, Charles Martinet is stepping away as an actor for Nintendo to becoming a Mario Ambassador.
The news broke in August from Nintendo that Martinet would no longer be voicing Mario starting with the game’s next entry – Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The company released a video featuring Martinet and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto to address this change.
“For many years, it’s been a privilege to be able to bring your amazingly wonderful characters to life,” Martinet said. In the video, Miyamoto mentioned a sweet anecdote about Martinet, “Whenever we’d meet, you would always call me ‘Papa,'” and continuing to mention that Martinet made sure to “place a priority on spreading joy, and I am sure that you will be a great Mario ambassador.”
As for who will be taking over Martinet’s roles, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser told IGN that fans will find out when the game launches on October 20th.
