CD Projekt, who developed The Witcher and more recently, Cyberpunk 2077, has been the target of a major cyberattack on Monday according to the company’s social media page. According to the company, hackers have reportedly stolen “certain data belonging to CD Projekt capital group.”
In the published ransom note, the hackers claim that they stole source code for Cyberpunk 2077, Gwent, The Witcher 3 as well as an unreleased version of Witcher. Other details including “documents relating to accounting, administration, legal, HR, [and] investor relations.”
In the note, the hackers gave the company 48 hours to initiate contact or “the source code will be sold or leaked online.” Leaving with a warning that the company’s public image will go down the shitter even more and people will see how you [sic] shitty your company functions.”
CD Projekt has stated that they will not negotiate with the hackers and that the company is “taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release,” while working with authorities and “IT forensic specialists” to investigate the hack. They did not confirm the stolen data, however, stated that no personal user data for any of its services were compromised.
Many are speculating that this hack is likely due to the rocky launch CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, which released back in December. The game launched with multiple issues in which CD Projekt issued apologies and refunds, as well as pulling the game from the PlayStation store. The company also is facing multiple class-action lawsuits from investors.
It’s easy to see, especially when reading the ransom letter, how this could be related especially with notes on CD Projekt’s public image – however, I offer another opinion that might be closer to the truth. Hackers are dicks, found a security flaw in the system, and tried to get some money out of the company which is something that would have been done no matter if Cyberpunk failed or was successful.
As the 48-hour mark is approaching at the time of writing this post – we’ll keep you posted on what happens with this hack.
