While it isn’t a new title in the series, Capcom did surprise everyone yesterday when they announced that the original Onimusha: Warlords is getting an HD Re-release for the Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox One and PC early next year.
Originally released in 2001, The Onimusha series started as a spin-off of Capcom’s Resident Evil series before growing into its own franchise. The game focuses on the samurai Samanosuke and his ninja friend Kaede who go on a mission to save a Princess from the demons who serve Nobunaga Oda.
The re-release is promising high-definition graphics, widescreen support, a new soundtrack and a new control scheme designed for analog sticks. Capcom Community manager Andy Wong also stated on the Playstation Blog that fans of the old-school controls will have the ability to play the game as it was originally designed and also keep the Fixed Camera angles.
The Onimusha series has been a cult favourite which many fans have clamoured for a return since Capcom has been pushing out re-releases of their classic titles on this generation, which has been quite successful for them. Capcom has also been known to re-release older titles to test the response for a new entry, which has had varying results as it was rumoured that the poor sales of the Darkstalkers Resurrection lead to the series being shelved.
Onimusha: Warlords is set to release on January 15th 2019, just little more than a week before the release of Resident Evil 2 Remake, and will be priced at $19.99USD.
