Last year’s Resident Evil 7 surprisingly didn’t match the financial success of its predecessor, Resident Evil 6, despite its much better reception from fans and critics alike. What is surprising about this in the day-in-age of games costing millions of dollars to develop is that Capcom seems to be fine with this.
“While we have shareholders to appease, it’s not just about commercial performance,” Capcom Europe COO Stuart Turner told GameIndustry.biz – -. “There is an artistic element that always comes in where we know this is the right way. And while if we compare RE7 to RE6 the absolute numbers are not the same, in terms of the profitability… it’s completely fine. It ticked all of our boxes internally. It was really well received. And in some respects, getting some very good review scores counts as much for Capcom as a game that sells millions and millions and millions. We’d prefer a game that got a 9 and sold less, than got a 6 but sold more.”
In our own reviews, Resident Evil 6 – which we’ve been replaying on our Twitch channel *shameless plug* – was considered a disappointment in the series, landing at a 6 out of 10, while Resident Evil 7 received our top rating of the year at a 9.4 and was considered “A twisted Masterpiece in horror and storytelling.”
That being said Resident Evil 7 has only sold 5.1 million units so far while Resident Evil 6 holds 7.1 million. However Capcom is looking at a longer view for measuring the game’s success, as it’s been making steady progress and still may one day surpass RE6’s numbers in the long run.
“We are less focused on day-one sales these days, too. We are looking much more at the long-term. And in that case RE7 is performing amazingly,” said Capcom’s Antoine Molant. “Even now, after almost two years, it’s still the VR flagship title. That helps keep the game selling well.”
Capcom also recently opened up about their fears in revealing the E3 trailer for Resident Evil 2 remake, knowing that there will be several major changes to the game compared to the original, which fan response has been extremely positive so far. This has opened the company up for the possibility of more remasters similar to the RE2 remake in the future.
