There is no doubt that Esports is a big thing, with major tournaments happening for games like Overwatch, League of Legends, and Fortnite getting plenty of media attention. So much attention that those uninformed about the gaming industry are starting to see it as more than a hobby or a pastime and possibly a career option for their children as they watch them wipe up the competition. But what can you do as an uninformed parent who doesn’t know anything about Esports and how to help their kids become the next big name? If only there was a easy guide, preferably in PDF form, to help with this.
That is where the British Esports Association, a not-for-profit organisation set up to promote and support esports, comes in. They have released a special parents guide to esports which includes topics like joining a team, different career options, benefits of esports, online safety guidance and more.
The guide (which you can see in PDF or article form here) also links to other content on the British Esports website which also shows how schools have benefited from taking part in the British Esports Championships – a series of PC gaming competitions for students 12 and above which kicked off earlier this month and is opened to all secondary schools, Further Education (FE) Colleges and Alternative Provision (AP) schools in the UK and feature games including Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League.
“Esports is an exciting activity that many young people have an inherent understanding of,” said Tom Dore, the head of Education at the British Esport Association. “The same is not always true for their parents or other adults.”
“The esports industry is growing exponentially around the world, but is still a relatively new phenomenon so it is not surprising that some parents don’t really know what it is, what its benefits are or how to best support their children who are getting involved with esports.
“We are continuing to engage with charities, education groups and parent-focused organisations such as the NSPCC, MumsNet, TES and ParentZone, to help educate all appropriate stakeholders around this.
“We hope our parents guide helps people to understand the world of esports, the benefits and opportunities it provides and how young people can have fun taking part with their friends safely.”
