How do you make the Doom Slayer (aka DoomGuy) – one of the most bad ass space marines ever, look even more bad ass? Apparently you just have to add a rocket attachment and cool blade thing to his armour.
At QuakeCon last weekend, Bethesda got to talk more about the upcoming sequel to 2016’s Doom reboot – Doom Eternal. This was the place to get all our questions answered that we had about the game at E3, plus some gameplay footage which for fans of the series and especially the 2016 reboot – was jawdropping.
As noted from the E3 trailer, Doom Eternal is following the footsteps of the orignal series and bringing its sequel to Earth with the demon invasion in full swing. There are plenty of new demons to take down and because of that the Doom Slayer needs a bit of an upgrade.
“Our goal is to make him the strongest and most powerful hero we’ve ever created,” id Software’s Marty Stratton told the crowd. The gameplay footage (above) does truly reflect this with some new weapons and mechanics. The Double Barrel Shotgun has a new grappling hook attachment that pulls you towards enemies, while an arm mounted blade makes Doom’s gory executions even more magnificent.
One of the more interesting features that id threw into the game involves the multiplayer. While the usual deathmatch multiplayers will return for the sequel (although they promise some new features in this mode as well) however it’s the new Invasion mode, a mode where real players can take control of a demon and sabotage another player’s campaign. Players will be able to go solo or team up with other people to form a “Slayer-hunting party”. While it does sound like a feature you’ll be able to turn off if you’re looking for a more solo or easier experience, but the feature does sound like it will add to the Doom Lore.
There is currently no release date for Doom Eternal, however we do know that the game is planning simultaneously on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. The Switch version has been confirmed to be in the works from Panic Button who previously released the ports of Doom and Wolfenstein 2: New Colossus to the Nintendo console.
