While Fallout 76 is one of the more highly anticipated games of the year, there are a few things that people want to know before the game comes out in November. Things like how is Fallout’s single-player progression system going to change to accommodate a MMORPG game, or what are we going to do about griefers out to ruin my fun.
Luckily, Bethesda’s Chris Meyer (development director,) Jeff Gardiner (project lead) and Todd Howard (game director) came up to the stage at QuakeCon 2018 to give us a bit of insight.
The team stated that the Fallout stat system, SPECIAL, will return and still determines players strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. As players level up in Fallout 76, players will also be able to add points to each stat which will now allow them to carry a specialized perk. Perks in 76 will be done via a card system, which the team states that there will be hundreds available. They confirmed that early on, players will receive new cards every 2 levels, and then every 5 levels later.
During the presentation, Howard showed off how this system would work by highlighting the Gladiator card. When added to the Strength slot, Gladiator adds an increase to melee damage. The card then could be upgraded to boost melee to an additional percentage. Other cards showed off included perks like healing with liquor, carrying more weight, hack terminals better, regenerate health after reviving other players and more.
But what happens when you run into a player who keeps killing players and disrupting your enjoyment of the game outside of PvP? Luckily the team has thought this through and according to Todd Howard: “We turn the assholes into interesting content.”
If a player kills another player, they’ll become a wanted murderer with a bounty on their head. This bounty will be paid out of the offending player’s cap total and will also relate to their level. Other players will also be alerted to the wanted murderers on the mini-map and be flagged with a red star. The wanted murderer won’t receive any indication that they’ve been flagged for death or if the other players are nearby.
Although, if you get killed by a player and feel the cold hard need for revenge, you’ll be able to hunt them down and try to kill them for double the ordinary cap payout. Although ordinary PvP kills will be paid off according to the level of the players taken down according to Howard.
Other details mentioned during the presentation included the customization options for your character and how you can change your appearance at any point and time, as well as the fact that mods will be supported in some form.
Fallout 76 will be out on PS4, PC, and Xbox One on November 14th, and a closed beta rolling out in October for those who pre-order.
