It’s no surprise that EA’s Battlefield V will have Microtransactions, in fact it’s kind of a common thing at the moment. While everything under the Tides of War strategy will be free, DICE has opened up on what kind of marketplace we can expect when the game launches.
The first thing to note is Battlefield V’s currency: the Company Coin and the Battlefield Currency. The Company Coin is earned through in-game progression – career progression, daily missions, special assignments – and will be primarily used for customization for your Company.
“You can use Company Coin to unlock choices within weapon and vehicle Specializations. You can also use Company Coin to get cosmetic items, such as jackets, face paint, and weapon skins,” DICE said in a blog post.
This may sound like a familiar system to most people as this is a very similar setup to the current economy in Star Wars: Battlefront II, which suffered from controversy due to some nasty pay-to-win style strategies which saw real money being used to unlock Star Cards and heroes who otherwise would have taken a large amount of time to access.
EA has also confirmed that Microtransactions will not be available at Launch. According to DICE: “Balanced rock-paper-scissors gameplay has always been the foundation of the Battlefield series, and our belief is that real-world money should not enable pay-to-win or pay-for-power.”
DICE recently confirmed that their Squad based Battle Royale mode – Firestorm – will also be delayed until sometime in March. The game itself is currently set to release on November 20th 2018.
