Now you may be asking, ‘This game came out a while ago, why do a review now?’ Well simple, because it’s a downloadable title, and it’s on Sale, and sometimes, it’s fun to review a game that’s a tad bit old, it really allows you to take your time and enjoy it.
Something I did not do with Hard Corps Uprising.
Why, because this game frustrates the hell out of me. It’s not a bad game, it’s just Contra. Those of you who played Contra knows that beating this game, even with the famous Konami Code, will make you a man!
Hard Corps takes place in the year 2613, after a fascist government called the Commonwealth has control of the world, leading for a resistance movement, you play as former Commonwealth soldier Bahamut and Krystal, a young girl looking to get vengeance on those who killed her parents, you to different locals to fight the Death Squad, and bring down the government.
Hard Corps has 2 modes, Rising and Arcade, in Rising mode, the game plays more like an story mode where your able to save your game and play certain levels at your convenience, it’s a different pacing for sure especially for Contra. All Playable characters have a different feel to them, for example, Bahamut is slower but has more health at the beginning of the game, where Krystal is a one hit kill, but is fast and has some weapons upgraded before hand. Counting in DLC is the strange character, a Samurai who plays the entire game using Melee attacks, in Rising mode, you are able to spend your points for more life(s), Health, Upgrades on guns, and special abilities.
Dispite the look, Hard Corps sounds and feels like a Contra game, you run from left to right shooting this, pick up special weapons like the Spread-Gun, and add in some new techniques like bouncing bullets, double jumps, and dashes, including these features would make one think it’s easier. It’s not.
Art and Music is done by the team who brought you Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, and you can completely tell that they chose a heavy Anime influence, with the guns being huge 2 hand weapons, clunky armor, and strange hair.
Dispite the Heavy Anime, and the drop of the name, Hard Corps is Contra, there is no ifs, ands, or buts about it. A Contra for a newer generation that still as hard as it was for when we were growing up.
