We already know to expect the upcoming Gearbox and Sega title Aliens: Colonial Marines to burst out of the Wii U soon as the game was shown on Nintendo’s Demo Reel for the upcoming console. But what exactly can we expect. Well in an interview with Joystiq, they attempted to extract some information from Gearbox’s President, Randy Pitchford, who gave them more on the title then anybody thought.
“Nintendo still has a lot to announce with their platform, and it’s not up to us to go ahead of them,” he told Joystiq when asked about the Wii U. “I think it’s a great platform and I’m really excited about it, particularly with this game, there’s a lot of exciting opportunities like, ‘Wow, my motion tracker is there, and I can move it like this!'” he said as he moved his arms side to side. “There’s just so much cool stuff.”
Considering that they were one of the first companies to get an alpha version of the console, Gearbox had been working with the new console for a while now, so what do they think of it? “There’s a lot that we can do with that screen,” Pitchford said. “It’s a really cool system — it’s pretty powerful. I want to be careful, because I don’t want to risk any sensitive information that Nintendo’s not ready to share yet, but in our experience it’s a great system. I think it’s a really nice bridge to the next generation. I think people will be surprised. I don’t know off the top of my head how many of the specs they’ve released, so I want to be very careful not to jump the gun, but we’re very pleased with the hardware. And even since they gave us our first alpha kit, our very first ‘pre-prototype’ development hardware that they kind of let us play around with, they’ve done so many things to make the platform better. So it’s getting better for us as developers.”
Randy also announced that the game will be an official sequel to Aliens and Alien 3, “After this game, Alien 3 is a better film, I think [Alien 3] is a great film, but I think that when we came off of Aliens, some of us wanted something different. Also, there were some weird things that we didn’t quite make sense of. Inconsistencies with the canon that were created. And it turns out that they’re not inconsistencies – there are reasons for things. And we get to be the ones that get to connect all that up and make it clear […] The fact that we can do it in video game form is just amazing.”
With this the art design team mentioned that they were keeping true to everything in the Alien world, including the outdated computer, the clothes, environment, down to the film grain of the films to have a much wider presentation.
Finally, a lot of questions to Randy about why the game was delayed for so long. That was because Colonial Marines was announced before any development was done on the game, this was due to the game’s previous attempt to launch on the PS2 from a different company altogether. Randy mentioned that the version of the game that we would see would have nothing to do with that previous version, and in fact the development time on the game would be around the same as Gearbox previous title ‘Borderlands.’
