When Borderlands first came out, there was high hopes and expectations; 87 Bazillion guns, large open world campaign, 4 player co-op. There was a lot to expect with a title this bold.
Borderlands 1 was a success but fans felt slightly disappointed; guns looked the same with different attachments and upgrades, a story that was more fitting for a MMO, and a fairly lackluster music selection aside from the use of Cage the Elephant’s “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” and DJ Champion’s “No Heaven.” Still Borderlands was fun with great multiplayer premise that worked, but there is always room for improvement.
The team at Gearbox Softworks has taken it’s criticism to heart, and like any good designer, they listened to it’s player to deliver one of the best FPSRPG yet.
Welcome back to Pandora Vault Hunter.
At the end of Borderlands, the Vault Hunters had found the Vault and it’s rare element which started bursting out of the planet. This gather the attention of the Hyperion Corporation and it’s leader, a self-righteous Douchebag called Handsome Jack. During his time on Pandora they found intel of another, bigger, Vault buried deep in Pandora; Jack vowed to find this Vault and bring order to the Borderlands.
This is where you come in, as one of 4 Vault Hunters, Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker, and Zero the assassin. After getting ambushed on a train and left for dead, you vow to take down Handsome Jack and the Hyperion Corporation.
Already there is a big improvement on the game as you have a more clear motive then looking for the vault for it’s treasure and fame, now it’s a mission of revenge against a man and his huge army that attempted to kill you. All the characters are likable from returning favorites like the original Vault Hunters, Claptrap, Dr Zed and Scooter, to new characters like Tiny Tina, Sir Hammerlock and Elle. Of course it’s Handsome Jack that steals the show with his arrogant attitude as he taunts you throughout the game.
Like in Borderlands 1, the guns play a big role in the game. The best part is that Gearbox listened to one of the most crucial part of everyone’s rants, all the guns look and feel different. From fast firing revolvers, double barrelled shotguns, burst fire rocket launchers, guns that can be used as grenades when reloaded, Borderlands 2 has a wide variety of guns for you to use and each one looks and feels different.
Having guns means nothing if you don’t have something to shoot at and Pandora throws a lot at you. Aside from the basic bandit enemies and skags, there are tons of new enemies including robots, bullymongs, shielded bandits (who uses other bandits as a shield for their shield) and much more. Each of them have a different strategy to deal with them or requires special ammo to easily dispatch them.
Borderlands 2 is a marvel for the simple fact that the fans got what they wanted to see from Gearbox in this sequel. More unique guns, more unique bad guys, and a much deeper story. With it’s new updates and upcoming DLC, I’m sure that this will be played for a long time to come.
