In true fashion to 3D Realms history, the retro-inspired fps Ion Fury is getting a slightly more modern look for its upcoming sequel – Phantom Fury.
To clarify, Ion Fury took on a look similar to mid-90’s games like Duke Nukem 3D, where Phantom Fury could be more comparable to that of SiN or Quake II.
Taking place years after the ending of Ion Fury, players will be brought back to the shoes of Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, now equipped with a new bionic arm and a new mission to track down a dangerous artifact called The Demon Core which is capable of unprecedented destruction, setting her off on a cross-country road trip across the USA to fight soldiers, cyborgs, mutants and more.
Developer Slipgate Ironwork has confirmed more than 20 weapons for the game, including some returning items like Shelly’s Loverboy revolver and Bowling Bombs, to armor-piercing shotguns, electrified foam, and controllable drones. Plus, shelly’s new arm also gives her new abilities such as a shield and a vicious punch attack.
Phantom Fury is slated for a 2023 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. An announcement trailer was released (see above) which shows off some of the carnage you can expect from the retro-inspired shooter.
