2K Games has confirmed that they will be “sunsetting” Gearbox Software’s Battleborn, the MOBA-Shooter that the studio released in May 2016 to mixed reviews. The servers are set to go offline and become unplayable in January 2021 according to an official support notice on 2K Game’s Website.
To put it bluntly – the term “to sunset” is to slowly let program or game die by removing some features or access to it. In the case of Battleborn, this process has already begun as 2K has removed Battleborn from digital storefronts and is no longer available to download from the Playstation Store, Steam or the Xbox Game Store. 2K has also confirmed that the game’s currency (called Platinum) will end as of February 24th, 2020.
Despite this, the game’s servers will remain running until January 2021, which then Battleborn will no longer be playable, including the game’s single-player campaign as the game had an always-online functionality. According to 2K, support for Battleborn is ending to focus its efforts and resources on other projects.
It’s unfortunate that Battleborn was never able to stand on its own, it was a MOBA-inspired shooter had some interesting characters and was fun to play, but quickly lost players once Blizzard’s Overwatch was released, which the game had often been compared to. In order to try to win back some fans, the game went free-to-play in June 2017 and released its final content update in September 2017.
