After the glitch-fest that was WWE 2K20, 2K Games has officially announced that they will not be doing another yearly iteration of the Wrestling franchise, instead opting for an Arcade-like brawler called WWE 2K Battleground – which will feature “over-the-top Superstar designs, environments and moves.”
The game is being developed by Saber Interactive – who is best known for their NBA Playground games. According to 2K, the game will focus on being a “social pick-up-and-play fun, but with plenty of depth for those who want to get way into it,” and similar to the Playground series, will also feature a roster of WWE superstars including The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, only with a cartoon-like design.
This doesn’t mean that 2K is done with the Simulation franchise though, as 2K has stated in a press release that they have taken the feedback for WWE 2K20 to heart and want to give Visual Concepts – who took over the franchise from Yukes – enough time to develop a wrestling game for the fans (that will not likely have as much game-breaking and hilarious bugs.)
“We are applying what we’ve learned to the next WWE 2K simulation game with a renewed focus on quality and fun,” the company said. “As part of that commitment, we are extending the production timeline and will not be releasing a WWE 2K simulation game in 2020 … We want to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game that will entertain grizzled WWE 2K veterans, as well as newcomers who want to climb through the ropes and step into the ring for the very first time.”
WWE 2K Battlegrounds is set to release later this fall. You can check out the trailer above.
