So the likelihood of Sega’s major MMORPG, Phantasy Star Online 2, coming to North America is unfortunately still very slim, fans of the online series can look forward to an Anime adaptation which will be distributed in North America by Sentai Filmworks sometime this year.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation will air in Japan beginning in January as part of the winter anime season and will be available in North America sometime in 2016 via “select digital outlets” followed by a physical release some time after.

According to Sentai, the animation focuses on protagonist Itsuki Tachibana, “a player of Phantasy Star Online 2, and the challenges he faces both in and outside of the game.” Game director Minoko Takasu and character designer Minoko Takasu are said to be working with Telecom Animation Film, the studio best known for Lupin the Third, Hamtaro, Monster Rancher and more recently the Bakugan series.

Phantasy Star Online has been available on PC since 2012 and was recently announced for a PS4 re-release in Japan. No word on the series ever coming to North America.
